Simone Biles didn’t announce her retirement or a pregnancy, as recent social media posts claim

Simone Biles is the most decorated gymnast in history and she finished the 2024 Olympics with three gold medals and one silver.

Even before her final performance Aug. 5 in the Paris Games, a floor routine that netted her the silver medal, a Facebook post claimed that Biles had announced her retirement and said she was pregnant.

“JUST IN,” the Aug. 2 post said. “Just Reported that America’s most decorated Olympic gymnast of all time, Simone Biles Announces Retirement at 27 After Securing Gold at Paris Olympics, Reveals she is ‘expecting a baby’ with her husband, Jonathan Owens. This joyous revelation marks a new chapter in her life as she steps away from competitive gymnastics to focus on her growing family.

Two Olympic athletes revealed that they were pregnant during the Games, but Biles wasn’t one of them.

We found no credible news reports corroborating the post’s claims, no public statements from Biles, and nothing on her Instagram, Facebook or X accounts. Her Wikipedia page has not been updated with any such news.

The New York Times reported Aug. 5 that Biles’ floor competition that day could be her final Olympics performance, citing Biles’ mother Nellie Biles and sister Adria Biles.

“‘Oh, this is it definitely,’ her sister, Adria said, convinced that Simone wants to start a family after marrying last year,” the Times story said.

But, the Times said, Biles has also hinted at competing in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

What we know for sure: She didn’t announce her retirement, or a pregnancy.
