Navigating through what felt like a maze, he finally took his seat with Simone’s family at 5:30 p.m., eagerly anticipating the competition that was set to start at 6:15 p.m. The pre-competition nerves were palpable, with Owens admitting his anxiety was at a “10.” Sitting with Simone’s mom, Nellie Biles, helped him stay calm as he tried to soothe their shared stress.
