44 dogs removed from hoarding situation Burton continue recovering

FENTON, Mich. (WJRT) – The 44 dogs rescued from a hoarding situation in Burton last week continue to receive medical care as advocates prepare to release them for adoption.

The small breed dogs were removed from a home where they were caged, starving and neglected. Genesee County Animal Control says 13 other dogs were found dead.

The city of Burton condemned the house where the dogs were kept and a woman who lived there is facing animal cruelty charges.

Genesee County Animal Control initially took custody of the 44 surviving dogs. They since have been released to certified rescue organizations to continue treating the dogs and preparing them for adoption.

Fenton Adopt-A-Pet took in some of the dogs to help with their recovery.

“All of them need various levels of care,” said Adopt-A-Pet Executive Director Jody Maddock. “Once we finish with the medical side of things and get them taken care of on that aspect, then we’re going to make sure that they’re all ready to go to be able to go into their forever homes and get the love that they’ve been missing out on.”

The dogs will be available for adoption when they are medically cleared. Adopt-A-Pet is accepting donations of money or canned food to help care for the dogs.
