Caitlin Clark’s boyfriend responded to her gushing birthday tribute with some fighting words.

On July 13, the 22-year-old WNBA rookie shared a sweet message to her boyfriend of one year, Connor McCaffery. “Happy Birthday Con,” she wrote on Instagram alongside multiple black and white photos of the couple, who met as college basketball players at the University of Iowa. “Celebrating you is easy 🙂 thankful to have someone as selfless and as loving as you in my life🖤.”

However, Clark ended the post with a little bit of playful teasing, adding, “May this be the year you finally find a way to outshoot me 😉 Love you always 🥺🤍.”

Unlikely! In 2024, Clark became the all-time NCAA Division I scoring leader, male or female, before joining the Indiana Fever as the WNBA’s first draft pick. On July 11, Clark was awarded two ESPYs, becoming the first woman to ever receive the award for best record-breaking performance.

Even so, McCaffrey decided to shoot his shot at a rebuttal in the comments. “Thank u b 🥹 Love you forever 🤞🏼❤️,” he wrote in one response, adding, “And I’ll keep letting you win those shooting contests!!!!!”

Another quoted Dodgeball, replying, “Bold move, Cotton, let’s see how it works out for him.”

Of course, most responders assumed McCaffrey was kidding. “Me when I lie,” one user joked back, while one fan wrote, “Your back and forth is so funny. I’m here for it. 😂.”

At least one fan called for a public shooting contest between the pair. Unfortunately, Caitlin Clark probably doesn’t have much time for that as she prepares for the WNBA All-Star Game against Team USA on July 20. As McCaffrey wrote on Clark’s birthday in January: “With all that you’ve already accomplished, there is so much more in store for you and your special self.”
